The heat is distributed from hot water tubing embedded in the floor, but can also come from tubes in the ceiling or a heating stove. The main benefits of these systems include even, comfortable heating that keeps the entire house warm, and energy efficiency that saves the environment and lessens the electric bill. The drawbacks include expensive installation costs, difficulty in performing repairs, and the fact that air conditioning must be provided by a separate system.
Hot Water Baseboard Heating Systems
These are similar to radiant heating systems, in that they use hot water to warm cool areas by combining radiation and convection. The hot water travels through pipes and into baseboards that are installed on the walls. Air is heated as it rises by the baseboard units. These systems are energy efficient, much quieter than other heating & cooling systems, and let you control the temperature without too much trouble. However, temperatures are slow to rise, the baseboards can limit your design options in regards to furniture, and air conditioning must be provided elsewhere.
Steam Radiant Heating Systems
These heating systems are not commonly used in the United States today, as they are very old-fashioned. Heat is distributed with steam piping and radiator units. These units are efficient and warm rooms quickly, but are also very unsightly. They also limit furniture distribution and don’t allow for air conditioning in Portland unless it is provided by a separate system.
